| Mae
Hong Son |
Mae Hong Son is situated close to the Burmese
border, some 274 kilometers from Chiang Mai. A rented vehicle
or bus will give you as unprecedented opportunity to see the
magnificent mountain districts of the North. Alternately,
a Thai Airways flight will get you there in about 30 minutes
at very reasonable cost. A must for the visitor is a visit
to the hillside temple of Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu which
gives a wonderful view of the town and surrounding countryside.

It is the home to many
of the hell-tribe peoples of Thailand; the mont famous of
which are the long-necked women of the Karen (Pa Dong) tribe.

and the Shan, who are related to the Burmese tribes. In
the surrounding areas is a number of hot springs and mountain

visit as well as numerous mountain caves. This location
has spawned the title The city of Three Mists The morning
markets are especially interesting where you can buy, apart
from the usual household items and foodstuffs, an array
of insect food such as crickets, worms, and ant eggs,

is extremely popular in this wide, fast-flowing waterway
with its length of 180 km, width of 30m and to a depth of
7 meters.

| Lamphun |
Legend
handed down for more than 1,400 years refer to this ancient
town as Hariphunchai. Its first ruler was Queen Chamthewi
who was of Mon extraction. In late 12th century, King Mengrai
overran the town and subsequently integrated it into the Lanna
Kingdom.
Today, Lamphun still retain its enchanting ambience
of a small but old community. It is some 670 kilometers
from Bangkok and only 21 kilometers from Chiang Mai. Located
on the bank of the Kuang River, its attractions include
ancient sites and relics as well as forests and mountains
and delightful lakes. Lamphun is the most famous producer
of longans.
Wat Phra That Harinphunchai This monastery is
approximately 150
from the township area, built in the reign of King Athittayarat
and has been repaired, renewed, and enlarged form time to
time. Phrathat Hariphunchai Pagoda is currently 46 meters
high having nine-tiered umbrella, made of gold weighing
approximately 6,498.75 grams, placing on the top. The base
is of square shape with 20 meters in length on each side.
On every full moon day of the sixth lunar month, there is
a celebration of this Wat Phrathat in term of the annual
fair.

| Lampang |
The 100 kilometers to Lampang from Chiang Mai may be reached
either by a bus down the excellent four-lane highway or by
any one of the six train's arriveing each day. Noted for its
colorful horse carriages, a tour of the city in one of these
quaint vehicles is a most enjoyable experience.
Another symbol of Lampang
is the White Rooster (or Kai Khow) which stands in front
of the City Gate. Legend has it that the God India was concerned
as to whether the people would wake up in time during a
visit by the Buddha so he disguised himself as rooster to
ensure they would awake at the crack of dawn.
Only
38 kilometers to the north is the famous elephant training
center and hospital. It is here that many sick and injured
elephants are given loving care on their road to recovery.
Apart from the many interesting temples and waterfalls,
Lampang is famous for its cottage industries. Hand-woven
fabrics and woodcarvings are readily available at reasonable

| Chiangrai
|
180 kilometers to the northwest of
Chiang Mai, the city of Chiang Rai nestles on the banks of
the Me Kok River and is part of the famous Golden Triangle
area. Near by Chiang Saen is where the borders of Burma, Laos,
and Thailand meet. Perhaps the most pleasant way to reach
the township of The Thon. From Chiang Mai, as air-conditioned
bus sets out hourly for the three-hour journey.
A visit to Chiang Rai would
not be compete without a visit to the Doi Tung Development
Project, begun under the Royal Patronage of the mother of
H.M. the King. The project is situated on the Reclining
Lady Mountains on the Myanmar border, where once the hillsides
were covered were covered with opium fields.
Today, Doi Tung has become
one of Thailand's main tourist attractions where lovers
of nature go the see deferent flora and faun from all over
the world in the Mae Fah Luang Arboretum. Furthermore, the
Royal Villa presents a beautiful combination in architectural
design of Swiss chalet, Log cabin, and Lanna style. More
than 300 residents of Doi Tung, from different ethnic groups,
show their skills in handicraft production, which are exported
to deferent corners of the world.
In the Chiang Rai Province
there are a number of natural caves, such as Thum Luang
(Big Cave), Thum Poo (Crab Cave), and Thum Pa (Fish Cave),
near Khun-nam Nangnorn. They are known for their spectacular
interiors but watch out for curious monkeys who like to
investigate your belongings.
This ancient city was built
in 1292 and has many fine temples and artifacts to view.
Chiang Rai was also constructed by King Mengrai and predates
Chiang Mai by four years.
